Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore is set to celebrate World Bee Day on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, organized by the Department of Entomology to promote beekeeping and raise awareness about the crucial role of bees in our ecosystem.
Bees are nature's finest gift and remarkable creatures that play a vital role in global food production. They are responsible for pollinating most of the vegetables, fruits, and crops we consume, significantly increasing crop yields. Beyond being the true heroes of food security, bees provide us not only with honey but also numerous valuable products while playing a crucial part in maintaining ecological balance and biodiversity.
Protecting bees is equivalent to protecting our environment. Increasing public interest in bee activities enhances the health of both the environment and agriculture. Therefore, to raise awareness about bees and commemorate Anton Janša, a famous 18th-century beekeeper, May 20, his birthday, is celebrated as "World Bee Day."
This year's theme, "The Role of Bees in Acting Together for the Benefit of People and the Planet," aims to create awareness about the necessity of bees in sustainable food production, biodiversity, and obtaining nutritious food.
As part of this initiative, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University's Department of Entomology will celebrate World Bee Day on May 20. The event will provide awareness about basic information on bees, honey production, and harvesting methods. Participants will also receive practical demonstrations on making candles, sculptures, and soap from beeswax, as well as the preparation of Nellikai honey and Gulkand.
To inspire children's interest in bees, various bee-themed games and competitions will be conducted, with certificates and prizes awarded to winners. Interested children, students, youth, and homemakers are cordially invited to participate in this World Bee Day celebration.
