The National Handloom day was launched on August 7th 2015 by the PM, Narendra Modi In Chennai last year, as a proclamation of Swadeshi Movement in 1905 at Kolkata.
Today an event was conducted at Dr. NGP College of arts & science to add tribute to the 'National handloom day'

A series of events was orchestrated by the students of Department of Costume Design and Fashion to commemorate on the second year of the handloom day. The students decorated the event hall with colorful and vibrant posters depicting the traditional weaves of India, enticing facts about Sarees, manufacturing process of handloom fabrics and handloom label mark launched last year by the PM.

Principal Dr.P.R. Muthusamy, K.Subbiah Quality Assurance Officer, Textile Committee, Ministry of Textile and department heads of the college graced the occasion.

Muthusamy, Principal in his welcome address applauded the commendable efforts of the students for highlighting this important day. The nation-wide recognition for the handloom day since last year has majorly helped in the retrieval of the industry and the livelihood of the weavers, he stated.
K.Subbiah from Textile Ministry, the key speaker presented with some interesting facts and figures about the handloom industry to the students. He proclaimed that India holds the first position globally in the manufacturing of handloom sector and that the industry have been the livelihood of nearly 65 lakhs hailing from low income group. He also highlighted the ease of handloom fabrics, it's eco-friendly nature & comfort and hence insisted the students for regular usage of handloom products.
