A meeting was convened at the Collectorate today to discuss on the release of water to PAP canal for the benefit of farmers in Coimbatore district. The district collector, T.N. Hariharan discussed with the Coimbatore district farmers on the preparations that needs to be carried out prior to water disbursement.
It was decided that water will be released from Thirumoorthy dam to the PAP canal on 13th September, 2016. The main canal travels a distance of 129 kms through the stretch and a total of 94,201 acres of agricultural land will get benefited through the PAP canal. Close to 50,000 farmers from the district of Coimbatore and Tirupur consider this canal, as one of the prime source for irrigation.

The farmers staying along the banks of the canal are strictly warned to stay away from activities like pumping water through motors, directly from the canal, to their respective farm lands. The Collector has issued strict orders to the electricity department to terminate the connection of offenders, who indulge in such prohibited acts. He stated that three special teams should be formed to monitor the situation and ensure proper disbursement of water to the farmers. The revenue and the Police department were also advised to oversee the disbursement starting from 17th October to 30th October.
District revenue officer, T. Christuraj, Sub-Collector, Vijaya Lakshmi and other senior officials were present during the meet.
