Tension as crude petrol bombs hurled at Hindu Munnani functionary's house

Vellore: Tension prevailed in the city after plastic bags containing petrol and cotton were found at a Hindu Munnani functionary’s house in Vellore on Sunday. Claiming that the petrol bomb was hurled targeting its functionaries, Munnani supporters blocked the Chennai - Bengaluru national highway demanding the arrest of the perpetrators.

Around 3 am on Sunday, when K Mahesh, divisional president of Hindu Munnani residing on Brahmanar Street in Sathuvachari was sleeping with his family, he heard a noise similar to stones being pelted. When he came out from his bedroom, he found petrol filled plastic packets with cotton threads in his house, said police sources quoting Mahesh.

Sathuvachari police rushed to the house and recovered the petrol filled packets. Meanwhile, supporters of Hindu Munnani gathered at Sathuvachari demanding the arrest of perpetrators for targeting its functionaries.

Besides, a petrol filled packet was recovered from a bus, owned by the Hindu Munnani district vice president T K T Sreenivasan in Sankaranpalayam near Bagayam. As tension gripped the city, P Pakalavan, Superintendent of Police, and Ajay Sreenivasan, Vellore Revenue divisional officer inspected the house and the bus.

Munnani supporters asked the shopkeepers on Sathuvachari Street to shut down, leading to a minor scuffle with the police. They gathered before the collectorate and raised slogans. Mahesh was provided police security after a Hindu Munnani leader was murdered in Vellore two years ago.
