An assistant commissioner of the central excise department in Coimbatore and his wife were sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment by the second additional district judge and a special judge for Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) cases on Friday in connection with a disproportionate assets case. The case was filed by the CBI in 2007.

The anti-corruption branch of the CBI in Chennai issued a press release in which it said that the investigation agency registered and examined a case against K Subramanian, assistant commissioner, central excise, Coimbatore, and his wife S Kasthuri on the allegation that the officer had "acquired assets in his name and in the name of his wife disproportionate to their known sources of income.".

When Subramanian was functioning as a superintendent in central excise department at Mettupalayam, Coimbatore, and assistant commissioner of the central excise in Mumbai, he had acquired assets in his name and in his wife's name, disproportionate to their known sources of income during his check period between January 1, 2003 and October 12, 2007.

After the investigation, a chargesheet was filed against the duo before the second additional district judge and special judge for CBI cases under Sections 109 the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 13 (2), 13(1) (e) of Prevention of Corruption Act 1988.

The judge N Muralidharan convicted the couple to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 to each of the two accused. The judge also passed an order to confiscate the fixed deposit of Rs 18 lakh that the duo possessed.
