Schools, colleges in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district to be shut due to heavy rains

Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Thursday declared holiday for all educational institutions for next two days i.e. September 23 and 24 in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district due to heavy rainfall.

Following heavy rainfall that has left several parts of the city inundated, the Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao issued a press note stating that all schools, colleges and universities falling under the jurisdiction of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and will remain shut in view of heavy rainfall. The CM, who is currently on an official tour to New Delhi, reviewed the situation in the state and instructed officials to gear up for any eventuality.

The CM further said that only institutions which are identified as centres for Group I exam will be open and excluded from the shut-down. On Thursday evening, the CM spoke to commissioners and collectors of Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy and Medak over phone. He instructed officials to shift people residing in low-lying areas in Hyderabad to safer zones. All MLAs, MPs, corporators and people representatives have been asked to be available round the clock and help the citizens. A meeting was also held by the municipal administration minister K Taraka Rama Rao to chalk out an action plan for relief measures in the city.

It needs to be noted that the Met department has issued heavy rain warning for the next few days. As heavy rains continued to pound the city for the second consecutive day, authorities said they are looking at the possibility of a largescale evacuation of people with the Army's help as flood waters inundated new areas and the government shut down schools for two days. Following the downpour, the state health department too has issued directives to all hospitals to stock medicines and be on high alert as the Met department said the city recorded 10.6 centimetres of rainfall over the last 24 hours and warned of more heavy rainfall.

In view of heavy rains, all parks under the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority were shut identified and police and National Disaster Response Force asked to be on standby.
