Dazzling Dandiya Raas & Garba at Gujarati Samaj

This year, 2016 is a special year for Sree Coimbatore Gujarati Samaj. A couple of months ago, this organization celebrated its 75thanniversary. Known to come together on every special occasion and festival, the Gujarati population of our city has united yet again. Thanks to the 11-night Navarātrī celebrations that are taking place in full swing at the Sree Coimbatore Gujarati Samaj. Dandiya Raas and Garba are an integral part of the celebrations. A spokesperson from this Gujarati Samaj, Coimbatore shares with us that planning and preparations for this event started two-months ago.

For the Gujarati folks, Navarātrī is incomplete without performing the traditional Dandiya Raas and Garba. Several Gujarati families who are originally from the state of Gujarat have made Coimbatore their home. Hundreds of families are members of the Sree Coimbatore Gujarati Samaj. Come Navarātrī and these families bond over traditional music, dance and of course authentic Gujarati cuisine. This festival is celebrated at the Gujarati Samaj that is located in R S Puram.

The celebrations begin post dinner. The young and the old participate in the celebrations. Families gather at the Gujarati Samaj. The ladies are dressed in traditional attire and the men are dressed in their best Indian wear. The Modi suite is a big hit with the men this season. When the men and women begin playing Dandiya Raas and performing the Garba, it looks like a riot of colours and a kaleidoscope of design.

We observe the ladies move so gracefully while performing the Garba and the Dandiya Raas keeps participants on their toes. The energy level is high on the dance floor and the dancers show no signs of slowing down.

Those who chose to remain audience watch in awe. The audience applaud the performance of the dancers while they enjoy the high tempo of the foot tapping numbers. We are still wondering how one can resist music that can put almost anyone on their feet to try their hands at the Dandiya Raas and Garba.
