On the morning of September 27, while he was on his way to college from home, near Erode, motorbike-borne, K. Nirmal Kumar met with an accident when his two-wheeler hit a bus. This 17-year old teenager was not wearing a helmet while riding his motorbike. Thus, he sustained severe head injuries. After given first aid at the Government Hospital (GH) Erode, Nirmal Kumar was rushed to Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) on Avanashi Road, Coimbatore.
During his hospitalisation, he underwent surgical and medical management. Nirmal Kumar did not respond to treatment. He was declared brain dead on October 2. However, his family who was coming to terms with his the loss came ahead to donate his organs. In the presence of family members and relatives, the team of doctors from KMCH and Government Hospital (GH), Coimbatore swung into action and completed the statutory requirement. The team of doctors harvested heart, liver, kidneys and eyes from K. Nirmal Kumar. The harvested organs i.e. liver and both kidneys were used for transplantation at KMCH. Heart was sent to other private hospital at Chennai and eyes were sent to another private hospital in Coimbatore.
“His loss is certainly unbearable to our family and by donating his organs, we felt that it would help at least someone to live their life fully. So, we wholeheartedly accepted to donate his organs” said Kulanthivel, Nirmal Kumar’s father from Nallampatti, farmer by profession.
