50 years of Dravidian parties rule in Tamil Nadu has not produced a hospital to treat our CM says Anbumani Ramadoss

Ramadoss, president of the Pattali Makkal Katchi party in a statement said that the lack of a world class hospital in Tamil Nadu is due to the failure of Dravidian parties who have ruled the state for 50 years. A debate has sparked among the people as to why the present Chief Minister (CM) and the CMs in the past are being treated at private hospitals rather than a Government Hospital (GH).

“CMs who ruled Tamil Nadu in the past have been admitted to hospitals due to some illness. Except Aringar Anna no one else has been treated at a GH. Instead, they were all treated in private hospitals. Based on these statistics we have to come to a conclusion that the GHs are not good enough to treat the CMs.” Ramadoss said.

This truth is painful. However, it must be noted that PMs are all treated at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). This is despite the presence of famous private hospitals in our capital.

“In 2009 the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh underwent a heart surgery at the AIIMS.” Ramadoss said.

Anbumani Ramadoss who was the health minister at that time made all the necessary arrangements for the treatment of them PM. The AIIMS offers quality treatment. This is one of the reasons why PMs continue to take advantage of this hospital. On the contrary, Tamil Nadu lacks a world class public health facility. According to Anbumani, this is one of the biggest failures of the Dravidian party who have ruled this state.

AIIMS hospital was constructed in the year 1956, after India got independence. This facility is now regarded as one of the best hospitals in the country. A branch of AIIMS was started in Jaajar in Haryana. Currently, AIIMS is also regarded as one of the largest medical institutes in the world.

It may be recalled that JIPMER hospitals at Pondicherry was given autonomous status during the tenure of Anbumani Ramadoss as health minister. Back then the development works were taken up at the cost of Rs1500-crores. This propelled JIPMER as the third best hospitals and medical institute in the country.

While taking into consideration, the quality of treatment offered, not even a single hospital in Tami Nadu can match JIPMER. According to Ramadoss, the parties that ruled Tami Nadu did not take any step to create a world class hospital nor have they initiated the central government to create one such hospital.

The Chennai General Hospital which is attached to the Chennai Medical College Hospital has a tradition of 352 years. The hospital which was started during the rule of the British in India was later upgraded into a medical college in 1835. About 181 years have passed since its upgradation yet no CM is ready to get treated at this hospital.

Tamil Nadu government has converted the new assembly buildings into a multispecialty hospital. Even that hospital is said to have no facility to treat the CM. A super speciality hospital was constructed in Salem due to the efforts of Anbumani Ramadoss when he was the health minister. He also allocated Rs.150 crores to construct a hospital in Madurai on the lines of the AIIMS.

This minister added that while they were in power, the DMK and the AIADMK parties failed to make use of the opportunity to construct a world-class public hospital. As part of starting AIIMS hospitals in many states in our country, a plan for starting a AIIMS hospital in Tamil Nadu was announced in February last year. In all the other states construction work has started.

Even land for the hospital has not been identified in Tamil Nadu. The central government has rejected all the 5 places recommended by the state government to construct this hospital. Tamil Nadu government has done nothing after that in this issue. This stands as an example of how interested the Tamil Nadu government is in the development of the health sector in this state.

At least in future the Tamil Nadu government should take efforts to build world class public hospitals in Chennai and Madurai. The government should also allocate land for construction of a hospital on par with the AIIMS. Additionally, the government must ensure that the construction of hospital is completed in the next two years, said the statement.
