The breast cancer center at the Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) was established to dispense knowledge and increase awareness of the importance of mammography in picking up cancer of the breast and at an extremely early stage. In this regard this center continues to host awareness camps and various programmes to educate women about breast cancer, its causes, symptoms and treatment. In order to help women in our city deal with this disease, city-based hospital KMCH today inaugurated its Image guided vacuum assisted biopsy system. S Lakshmi Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Coimbatore inaugurated this system.

Dr. Rupa Renganathan of the breast cancer center, KMCH has close to 15 years of experience as a radiologist and is passionate about breast imaging and interventions. She disclosed that the vacuum assisted biopsy device was not only useful in tumours that are non-cancerous but also to analyse tissue from an area which is suspicious but could not be felt.

Thus under specialised imaging guidance where this area of abnormality is seen, Dr Rupa delicately navigates the needle to the target site and then removes bits of tissue which are analysed and later confirmed to be normal or abnormal.
Dr. Nalla G Palaniswami, Managing Director and Chairman, KMCH said that introducing the breast cancer center to Coimbatore itself was a revolution and it was under his leadership that this center was set up.

Speaking at the inauguration this morning, this visionary shared that he had visited several such centers in America where a woman with any form of breast problem could have a single point to access the issue and get appropriate treatment. Our city lacked such a center. As if to make up for this dearth, Dr Nalla G Palaniswami translated his dream into reality. Thus, the Breast Center at KMCH opened its doors to the public in our city.
