As a part of road expansion plans last week several trees that dot the Pollachi Main Road were uprooted and planted in a new location in the city. As a part of city expansion plans, it was stated that the Pongaliamman Kovil (temple) that is located on Kulakarai the Pollachi Road must be demolished. Ever since this news spread among the devotees, they have demanded that the state highways department should not indulge in such activities as the temple is very ancient and older than 1000 years.
One of the devotees shares that this temple has an age old tree, uprooting the tree for expansion of road will hurt the feelings of thousands of devotees. Moreover, there is a huge well in the vicinity of this temple. It is stated that this well irrigates the neighbouring agricultural lands, a natural spring with water throughout the year. The closure of this temple can have an impact on the well too, the petitioners said.
Devotees of this temple petitioned the district collector and the National Highway Department requesting them to re-consider their decision of having this temple closed.
