Heart ferried across 34km in 32 minutes

Traffic police set up a green corridor to help transport a live heart for transplantation from BGS Global Hospital, near Kengeri, to Narayana Hrudayalaya, Hosur Road, late on Monday night.

The green corridor was set up along Nice Peripheral Ring Road. The donor was a 30-year-old woman from Datathreya Nagar, Bengaluru. She met with an accident on October 12 on Nice Road. Admitted to BGS Hospital, she was declared brain-dead on Sunday morning. Her husband and the rest of her family gave consent to donate her organs.

The heart was harvested in BGS Hospital and left in an ambulance at 9.36pm. It took 32 minutes to travel 34 km to reach Narayana Hrudayalaya. The procedure started at Narayana Hrudayalaya post 10pm and is expected to take two hours. The recipient was a 45-year-old man from Kolkata who is suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy. He had registered with the Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka for Organ Transplantation on July 13.
