The city is soaked in the festive mood. However for a section of people it is not a bright and colourful diwali this year. The small scale traders based out of our city continue to stay gloomy as they have not done business as expected during this festival season.

Gandhipuram in our city is home to over 200 small scale traders who run their respective shops in this area. A majority of them have not done business as expected this festival season. Speaking to SimpliCity, one of the small scale traders shares “This year diwali is celebrated during the month end. Month end is a time when people are left with little or no money. It is the dull period to do business. This year we have spent more than what we have earned.” Meenakashi Sunderam says. He is not the lone business owner who is experiencing this.

A section of business owners are blaming the online shopping craze that has caught up on people. The online stores lure customers with discounts and special offers this season. Hence they continue to do brisk business. This has kept the shopping crowds from visiting the small scale traders. Thus, their business is hit hard.
Apart from the threat from the online stores, the small business establishments are facing tough competition from the big players in the market. A majority of people, given a choice prefer to visit the big stores. Thus the small shops do not have many takers.
With diwali not so bright and colourful, let us hope that the business establishments make up for the loss in business during Christmas and New Year.
