On 15th October, the ten-day-old abandoned elephant calf at Sirumugai reserve forest area that was shifted to Theppakadu in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) for medical treatment died today, not responding to treatment

'Generally the calf takes lactation from it's mother for the first couple of years. Unfortunately, this calf was too young to be separated from it's mother. Lack of lactation and mother's care has been the main cause for it's death. The calf was provided with required nutritional supplements and medical care at the MTR after initial progress the calf showed signs of deterioration in health along with diarrhea and these recent days' say sources from MTR.
The death of the calf has deeply saddened the team of veterinarians and animal enthusiasts.
