Mother-calf acclimatise well to wilderness, says forest officials


The 30-year old female tusker that was rescued from Periya Thadagam and later shifted to Sadivayal for treatment delivered a healthy male calf on the 23rd of this month. After assessing biological, environmental and other ecological factors, the team of forest officials, veterinarians among other experts released the mother and its calf back to the wilderness. The two continue to be closely watched by this team of experts.

Sources share that the female elephant and its calf were spotted yesterday at Porathi area of Mullankadu beat near Vellapathi section at around 4:30pm. The mother-calf duo is getting acclimatised to the natural environment and the forest officials are affirmative that soon the two would join a new herd of elephants. The monitoring will continue for another 2-3 weeks, say officials.
