A couple of days back a dozen elephants rampaged the farmlands of Nagaraj at Thirumalaiyampalayam, Ettimadai causing a damage to close to 2 lakhs. Yesterday night, a herd of nine in the same area rampaged the Koyas farm land. Close to 600 banana trees have been reportedly damaged by the herd consisting of 6 adults and 3 calfs. The farm owner, P V Mohammed shared that he sensed trouble and he alerted the forest officials of a possible attack by a herd of elephants last afternoon itself. He also claims that even after repeated calls the forest officials did not turn up on time.
At around 11 am last night, started destroying crops in his banana farm. By the time the forest officials reached the spot, the natives of this region joined together and adopted various methods to chase off the herd from the agricultural piece of land.
“We, the agricultural farm land owners are caught in the cross fire of officials and the animals in the wild. The swift response by the officials could save us from huge damage. Only when there is a delay from their end we are forced to use alternate methods to safeguard our lands from the tuskers.” say villagers of Thirumalaiyampalayam.
