Cybercrime branch soon in state: Pinarayi

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the assembly on Monday that the government will set up a cybercrime branch to deal with cybercrimes in the state. Police have registered 1,273 cyber cases in the state between 2014 and 2016. Of them, 21 were ATM theft cases.

If needed, the government will appoint an IT expert to help in the investigation of cyber cases. At present, the cyber police are functioning with the help of Keltron. Even though Keltron is giving sub-contract for few works, it has been ensured that the secrecy of the investigation is maintained. It has also been decided to set up more cyber police stations at the district level, the chief minister said.

The government will also crack down on the misuse of social media. At present, anyone can propagate whatever they want through the social media. Hence there is a need some regulation.

Four persons have been arrested as part of investigations in the ATM theft cases.

The government is seriously considering the inclusion of cyber security and cyber threat awareness in the school curriculum. The cyber dome has been given all technical help for developing new software and mobile application for the police force.
