Drinking water supplied at TNHB Colony, Korattur, is giving out a foul smell as effluents from factories at Ambattur have entered Metrowater pipelines, say residents.
With the Korattur lake closed down for beautification by the public works department (PWD), the natural flow of water is affected and polluted lake water is flowing into storm water drains in TNHB Colony, from which it is seeping into water pipelines.
Korattur resident and the local residents' welfare association president E Indhumathu said, "We are forced to buy canned water. Drinking water flowing into our water tanks is oily and reeks of sewage." Ambattur Industrial Estate Manufacturers Association (AIEMA) claims effluents from factory units are sent through sewage treatment plants before being released into the Ambattur lake.
AIEMA president G Venu said, "There are two treatment plants to treat effluents - a two million litres daily (MLD) and a two MLD sewage treatment plant." Contaminated drinking water is just one of the concerns of the residents. With northeast monsoon expected to set in soon, 3,500 families fear inundation.
