A group of 15 like-minded individuals from our city joined hands and establish the 'Sparrow Conservation Movement' to save the house sparrows from becoming extinct. Their efforts have paid off as several other people have joined hands with them and this group has successfully managed to spread the awareness among public about the need to save these little birds.

Speaking to SimpliCity, one of the founders of this movement Pandiyarajan says “Humans are responsible for diminishing of the home sparrows. Initially, we lived in homes which had enough spaces for the sparrows to dwell. A natural space for the home sparrows to grow and breed was in existence. However, now-a-days our homes are built the contemporary style leaving little or no space for the home sparrows.
Secondly, the remains from the kitchen and the rice or millet husks thrown at the backyards of the house were the main source of fodder for the sparrows. But today things have changed the bird does not have a space to thrive nor food'

In order to save the sparrow population from becoming extinct, a few members and volunteers of this movement conducted a trial in the city. As part of this initiative, the volunteers of this group placed wooden boxes in public spaces in our city also in a few residential colonies.. Surprisingly, the sparrows placed twigs and coconut shell dust inside the box and started to breed in the boxes. Motivated by the sight of the sparrows growing in numbers, the volunteers gained momentum and placed more boxes at sparrow-friendly areas.
Research points out that our lifestyle changes to dependency on fast foods and technology has dampened the natural habitat of the home sparrows. Thus it's important that we do little things like this to save the dwindling population of these sparrows.
If you are interested in placing a box for the house sparrow in your home or commercial establishment kindly call 99438-50907, the volunteers of the sparrow movement would be glad enough to assist you with their free nest box. So far this group has given away 400 such boxes to the public.
