Unaccounted cash seized in Coimbatore and Nilgiris

Officials in charge of election duty in The Nilgiris and Coimbatore have seized unaccounted cash at various places in the districts.

In Coimbatore, flying squad officials led by squad head Gopal of the Singanallur Assembly Constituency, seized Rs. 1.08 lakh from a vehicle on Ukkadam Bypass Road on Wednesday morning.

Sources said that Mr. Gopal and team also intercepted another car and found the occupants carrying Rs. 75,000 without proper documents. The seized money has been deposited in the district treasury.

They said that the persons, who carried the money, need to approach the appellate authority in the district and furnish proof, if any, for the seized cash to get it back.

In the Coimbatore South Assembly Constituency, officials led by Returning Officer P. Gandhimathi seized Rs. 4.59 lakh from a woman, identified Tamilarasi. The woman could not furnish documents for the cash that was found in her car , said Ms. Gandhimathi.

The officials then handed over the money to the district treasury.

In The Nilgiris district, poll officials seized Rs. 41.68 lakh in Udhagamandalam, Coonoor and Gudalur Assembly Constituencies on Tuesday, says a release from the administration. On Wednesday, they seized 5.09 lakh from five persons at Katteri Junction, Kunjapanai check post and a few other places in the Coonoor Assembly Constituency.

Meanwhile, the All India Christian Federation in Udhagamandalam has appealed to the Chief Electoral Officer, Tamil Nadu, to ensure the presence of women police personnel in the teams that check vehicles for unaccounted cash.
