Polling begins on a moderate note in three Tamil Nadu constituencies and in one Puducherry constituency

Polling began on a moderate note in Thanjavur, Aravakurichi and Thirupparankundram assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu and Nellithope constituency in the Union territory on Puducherry on Saturday morning.

Polling progressed peacefully in all constituencies after it began at 7am.

A total of 5,304 officials is involved in polling duty in three constituencies in Tamil Nadu. As many as 12 companies of central paramilitary forces are deployed for security.

The elections in Thanjavur and Aravakurichi are being held now after the Election Commission of India rescinded the polls before the May 16 assembly election in the wake of large-scale bribing of voters by political parties.

The ruling AIADMK retained former minister V Senthil Balaji and M Rengasamy in Aravakurichi and Thanjavur respectively while DMK retained K C Palanisamy in Aravakurichi and Anjugam Bhoopathi in Thanjavur. All of them were in the fray for the May 16 assembly election.

There are 14 candidates in Thanjavur constituency while 39 candidates are contesting in Aravakurichi.

The bypoll in Thirupparankundram constituency in Madurai district was necessitated as S M Seenivel of AIADMK died before taking oath as a member of the assembly after the May 16 election. The main contenders in this constituency are A K Bose of AIADMK and P Saravanan of DMK. There are 28 candidates in the fray in Thirupparankundram.

The byelection was necessitated in Nellithope assembly constituency in Puducherry after Congress legislator A John Kumar resigned from the assembly to enable chief minister V Narayanasamy to be elected to the House. Narayanasamy didn't contest in the May 16 assembly election. Narayanasamy, who assumed charge on June 6, will continue as chief minister if he wins the election.

AIADMK candidate Om Sakthi Sekar, who won twice from Nellithope constituency (in 2006 and 2011) before losing last assembly poll to John Kumar, is the main opponent of Nararyanasamy. There are eight candidates in the constituency.
