City-fame '20 rupee doctor' is no more!

It's a day to mourn for the people of the city, especially the people around the Avarampalayam area. Well known for his humble and humane nature and often referred as '20 rupee doctor' by his patients, Dr. Bala Subramaniam passed away yesterday at his residence due to a cardiac arrest.

Since, a few decades Dr. Bala Subramaniam has been doing justice to his profession by ensuring medical help to the needy through his consultation centre at Avarampalayam. His humble nature combined with uncompromising treatment was a ray of hope for the economically-deprived people.

'Well ahead of his clinic timings, people with illness, parents carrying their sick children, senior citizens would be seen all around the area. It's just not about consultation, he mostly gives medicines and tonics free of cost to the patients, to ensure that they take the medicines for the stipulated time.

Initially residents around Avarampalayam were his patients. But shortly, his service spread like wildfire and people from all around the city started thronging his clinic seeking quality consultation at very affordable rates', shares a senior citizen from Netaji Nagar, Avarampalayam.

Patients share that, 'He would not ask for a fee if he finds the patient to be economically deprived. Injections were also provided free of cost. He is a gem of a doctor, we all respect him and will live in our hearts forever'.

It's during the recent times he started collecting Rs. 20 from the patients and that's how the name '2 rupee doctor' got transformed into '20 rupee doctor'.

Scenes of people paying floral tribute and candles at his locked clinic shows the impact Dr. Bala Subramaniam has created in the lives of thousands of people through his humane service. Undoubtedly, his memories will beat in their hearts forever.
