All people who are born in this earth are equal. Humanity should show love and respect towards other human beings and living beings. But humanity is lost due to the dog eat dog in the world we live in. Coimbatore is fast becoming a two wheeler rider’s nightmare.
As this is the scenario on the roads of Coimbatore being an ambulance driver is herculean task. Many of us might have already seen once or twice how ambulances are stuck in traffic. As the situation on the roads is like this being an ambulance driver needs special skills to drive the patient safely to the hospital. Ambulance drivers say that often people on the roads try to overtake the ambulance or would not allow the ambulance to pass.
Sundar, a 108 ambulance driver when speaking about problems he faces as an ambulance driver said, ”I am working as the driver of 108 ambulance service. In Coimbatore, there are 36 (108) ambulances in Coimbatore.

Singanallur, Sivananda Colony, Thudiyalur, Sulur, Peelamedu, Central fire and rescue office are the places where the 108 ambulances are stationed. During the distress calls the vehicle nearest to the spot will attend to the call. It will rescue the victim and the victim will be admitted to the hospital. When there is no traffic on the road, we will cover a distance of 10kms in 7 minutes. When we get delayed the survival chance of the victim is reduced.”
He also shares that two-wheeler drivers often try to follow the ambulance. They are doing this to jump traffic signals. “When we suddenly apply breaks people who follow us who are unable to apply the brakes and they automatically will hit the ambulance. This is happing on our roads more often. Please don’t follow the ambulance. Following an ambulance not only causes trouble to you but also to the person who is struggling for life inside the ambulance.”
He also adds that people who use AC cars often shut the windows when they are using AC’s and also play loud music. They are not able to hear the siren sound when an ambulance on the road. They fail to give way for ambulance. Police should take action against such people.
Women who drive two wheelers get agitated when they hear an ambulance. Many women fall down and injure themselves. They also need to be taken to hospital. “Don’t get agitated when you hear the sound of the ambulance. Ambulance drivers are well trained. So when you hear an ambulance all you need to do is move your vehicle to the side of the road.” he advices.
One of the ways to solve this trouble is to create a separate lane exclusively for the ambulances. Ambulances have to wait in the traffic signal when we have to use the main roads. The left side of the road should be left free for the ambulance to pass police should make sure that ambulance are passing without any holdups in signals.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Coimbatore S. Saravanan, said, “Coimbatore has a lot of hospitals qualified to deal with multiple specialities including emergency, trauma and accident. Since the road facilities are less in Coimbatore a dedicated lane for ambulance is not possible now. We are recommending a dedicated line and this can be possible when our city will be upgraded to a smart city.”
False Sirens
Every ambulance always uses a siren. But in many instances there will be no patient inside the ambulance. Due to the mistakes of a few people many suffer. Ambulance drivers should avoid doing this activity. The traffic police personnel who are manning the signals have been advised to clear the traffic for the ambulance that travels on that particular road.

Many of us might think whether giving way for ambulance is an issue. But, when we are giving way to an ambulance we are giving a chance for a person to survive. Live and let live.
