The Department of Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery and Department of Urology and Nephrology, Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) will start to perform open-heart surgeries and kidney transplantation procedures respectively by this year end.
Speaking to SimpliCity, Dr. Edwin Joe, Dean, CMCH shares, “Paper work, obtaining the necessary permission, sourcing the equipment and training the medical and para-medical staff to perform both the procedures is currently under progress. We are hoping to perform our first open-heart surgery and the debut kidney transplantation procedure at the CMCH by this year end.”
Sharing information on this, Dr Joe tells us that both these procedures (open-heart surgery and kidney transplantation) will be covered under the Chief Minister, J Jayalalitha’s comprehensive health insurance scheme. The shortlisted, deserving patients who wish to take advantage of any of these procedures will be referred to Chennai, where they will be reviewed by a panel, who will subsequently sanction the funds for the respective procedure.
“We are expecting to send our first patient to avail sanction of funds for the open-heart surgery to Chennai during the second week of December. The cost of this procedure is anywhere between 3.5-lakhs to 4-lakhs. We have no targets but we have plans to perform as many open-heart surgeries and kidney transplant procedures.” Dr. Joe says.
