Obesity is a lifestyle disorder that has not spared the young or the old. In order to spread the necessary awareness about obesity, November 26th is observed as World Anti Obesity Day by various health care and wellbeing organizations across the globe. Back home in Coimbatore, this day was observed at the Sri Krishna Institutions Coimbatore.

136.1 Yoga Studio and Sri Krishna Institutions hosted a ‘Yoga on the Lawn – a health awareness programme’ for the faculties and public at the of Sri Krishna Arts and Science College campus. About 150 people participated in this programme where they were introduced to yoga asanas that can help keep obesity under control.

Lokeshwari, Yoga Therapist performed the various yoga asanas and also delivered a talk. “Overweight and obesity occupies the major causes for various diseases and death. Nearly about 2.8 million people die every year due to the overweight and obesity. It is a reason for many diseases and majorly causes diabetes.”
“Obesity is a non-medical and life style disease and is also becoming a cause of several other diseases. Obesity when left untreated may lead to diseases like cancer, heart attack and also the common diseases like diabetic, blood pressure, high cholesterol and sleep disorders. People who have obesity problems are affected by depression and other psychological diseases. Research also proves that obesity can cause infertility. Diet control and regular work out are the best ways to control obesity.”
Talking about the problem of obesity in India, Lokeshwari stated that our country has more obese and over-weight people. Lack of physical exercise and inability to control food intake are the main causes of obesity. Statistics proves that, one in five in India has obesity related syndromes and about 41 million people are suffering from by obesity in India. Obesity in belly is the commonly found in India and child obesity is also in an increasing trend in our country.
Educating the audience on how to keep this lifestyle disorder under control, Lokeshwari told her audience that “We have to regularly check our body weight with Body Mass Index (BMI) standards. The right calorie intake, eating a balanced diet, regular work outs, exercise, walking, yoga and meditations can help keep obesity under control. Self control is the best way to control body weight. There is no need of medical treatment for the problem of obesity if one is involved in a regular workout routine.”
