Race Course in the spotlight for the wrong reasons

Ask the natives of Coimbatore to name a few posh areas in this city and race course is sure to be one of them. This area has received the attention of the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) too. For instance, the CCMC has created several facilities and infrastructure in this area.

There is a park and there are facilities for people to work out too. Additionally, the race course road also has a walkers’ track where thousands of people, including elderly, come for their morning and evening walk. Not to forget that the city administration has also providing free Wi-Fi service in this area, enabling people stay connected while they are on the go.

Throughout the day and during the night, several people take advantage of the race course road. It has been reported that the various facilities, including parks are under the purview of the CCMC.

However, despite all these facilities, the race course road has hit the headlines for the wrong reasons. The city administration has installed lights on either sides of this stretch. It has been reported that a few of these lights in this area are non-functional.

It has also been reported that this stretch has given room to several ill-legal activities.

It may be recalled that recently, during the night, a 20-year old sandalwood tree which was located in this area was felled and smuggled by miscreants. Another sandalwood tree that stood on the land that belonging to the CCMC, behind the race course police station was also chopped. The police have registered a case in this regard and are investigating.

Furthermore, it has been also reported that a majority of crimes are committed post sunset due to lack of proper lighting in the area. It would be nice if the officials take a closer look at this stretch and takes necessary steps to maintain the lights in the area as it will help the public who is taking advantage of the various facilities along the race course road.
