The theme for World AIDS Day 2016 is Hands up for #HIV Prevention. The city stood united to observe this day.
This morning, members and volunteers of the Assisi Snehalaya, a shelter home for those infected with HIV/ AIDS hosted a special prayer session to offer prayers for those who are infected with HIV/ AIDS. Assisi Snehalaya is a shelter home that was founded by the Franciscan Conventuals, in 2004.
This home continues to offer shelter and medical support to kids and adults infected with HIV/ AIDS. For, about 35 children and 5 adults who have been tested positive for HIV and who are abandoned by their families Assisi Snehalaya is home. Today, on World AIDS Day, special prayers were offered for victims of HIV/ AIDS at the 1,300-year old Perur Patteeswarar Temple , Perur.

During the afternoon, the Coimbatore Chapter of Jamaat-e-islami Hind hosted a special prayer session for those infected with HIV/ AIDS at the Masjidhel Ihsaan in Karumbukkadai. Those who are diagnosed with HIV/ AIDS were remembered in prayers offered by devotees at the Infant Jesus Church, Kovaipudur.
Even the medical fraternity chose to observe this day. The nursing students of PSG College of Nursing and faculty observed World AIDS Day. Social workers of the Sree Narayana Guru College created awareness about this day.

NGO, Shanti Ashram too hosted a day-long programme to commemorate World AIDS Day. As a part of the event, creating awareness among the youth about HIV/ AIDS, its prevention and impact, engaging religious leaders and institutions in reducing stigma and discrimination, organizing care and support meetings for families living with HIV and partnering with health care providers and People Living With HIV (PLWA) networks to provide adolescent health services was organized by Shanti Ashram.

“Since 2002, Shanti Ashram has worked for HIV prevention, care and support. SUDAR is an established community care project for children and families living with HIV. The goal of the SUDAR project is to provide Children Living with HIV (including Orphan and Vulnerable Children), an improved quality of life with focus on sustaining the continuum of care for 100 children living with HIV AIDS, supporting the children’s families by capacity building of mothers and grand-mothers and increasing public awareness on HIV to help reduce stigma and discrimination.” Vijayaragavan Gopal, Head, Youth Leadership Programme, Shanti Ashram, Coimbatore said.
