KMCH performs complex pacemaker procedure on Kenyan woman

Lucy Karanja (62) from Nakuru, Kenya visited city-based Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital (KMCH) with a complaint of multiple episodes of giddiness coupled with difficulty in walking even for a short distance. She was also experiencing difficulty in breathing too.

This patient had already undergone the replacement of right side heart valve in United States of America a couple of years ago. At KMCH, she was referred to the Electro Physiology Department, which has the complete infrastructure for Heart Rhythm Management.

Dr. M. Lawrance Jesuraj, Consultant – Electro Physiology at KMCH evaluated patient Lucy Karanja and found out that she is suffering from a very slow heart rate lesser than 35 beats /min. The medical management would have provided her only a short term relief and Dr. M. Lawrance Jesuraj performed pacemaker procedure to enhance the heart rate to have a better quality of life.

A source from this hospital shares that the patient already had an artificial valve fixed in the place where the pacing wires to be fixed. Thus, performing this procedure proved to be a challenge, which this team of specialist at this hospital overcame.

Dr. M. Lawrance Jesuraj said “Although implantation of a permanent pacemaker is relatively common task that is carried out by fixing two wires inside the heart. But particularly, Lucy Karanja had a unique problem of having already an artificial valve from her earlier surgery in the same location where the pacing wires to be fixed. This was a big hurdle for us. However, after a detailed discussion with her son Silas, we decided to place and fix the two chamber pace makers with one wire in the right atrium (upper chamber of the heart) and other one through the vein of the heart.”

We are told that this complex procedure took more than four hours was performed at the Cath Lab of KMCH. The patient was discharged from this hospital two days post this procedure was performed.
