Married woman attempts suicide at District Collectorate today

Jansi Jelina (35) is living on Chettipayalam Road, in Malumachampatti in Coimbatore district is married to Franklin who is working in private company. They have a seven year old daughter Pearlin. However, the couple has been living separately since one year. On 17 November Jansi approached the Podanur police seeking help to be united with her husband. Subsequently, the police who conducted an enquiry, advised the couple to live together.

Following this, Franklin promised to take his wife and child home in two days. However, as he has not returned, Jansi visited the collector’s office to file a petition. Today, the employees at the District Collectorate informed her that the scheduled grievance meeting has been cancelled as a seven day state mourning has been announced. An angry Jansi came out of the office and tried to immolate herself by pouring the kerosene she had brought along with her.

Guards who were on duty at the district Collectorate prevented Jansi from taking the extreme step and handed her over to the police. She was sent home after being counselled. Following this incident, the District Collectorate remained tense for some time.
