Coimbatore collector T.N. Hariharan has said that Rs.1,14,61,300 has been distributed to 429 beneficiaries under the Tamil Nadu farmers protection scheme of the Tamil Nadu government. Assistance will be provided to farmers who have registered under the scheme for marriage and maternity, during old age, in case of accident, death and for performing last rites. Educational scholarships have also been provided for the members of the family of the deceased. To benefit from the scheme a farmer should have not more than 250 acres of wetland land and less than 5 acres of dry land.
Farmers who are between the age of 18 and 65 who are directly involved in farming or the people who are farming in the leased land are eligible to register as members under the scheme. There are no registration charges to register for the scheme. Those who are receiving marriage assistance through the social welfare department are also eligible to receive assistance under this scheme. Rs. 5000 for men and Rs.10000 for women is provided for marriage.
Those who 50 years old or those who cannot work due to old age will be provided Rs.1000 as pension every month. In case of death due to accident Rs.1 lakh is provided and in case of disability due to accident Rs.20000 to Rs.100000 is provided.
In case a farmer who is registered under this scheme dies due to natural causes Rs.10000 will be provided apart from Rs.2500 for performing the final rituals. In case if a farmer is diagnosed with TB, Cancer or AIDS Rs.1000 is provided as assistance and in case if a child loses its parents due to HIV the child will be provided Rs.1000 per month up to the age of 18. Also Rs.1000 is provided for the persons who are undergoing dialysis due to kidney problems.
So far Rs. 1,41,61,300 has been provided to the farmers in Coimbatore district under the Farmers protection scheme. Pregnant women can register themselves with the health and family welfare department and benefit from the scheme.
Arumugaathaal a beneficiary of the scheme has said, “My husband’s name is Marannan. We are from Theethipalayam neat Perur. We both work as agricultural labourers. We have registered under the farmer protection scheme. My husband died three months ago. Life was difficult after his death. I was provided a cheque for Rs 100000 and Rs.12,500 for performing final rituals. It helped my family. I thank the chief minister for the scheme.”
Gayathri a college students another beneficiary of the scheme has said, “My father’s name is Ravichandran, We are living in Ramapattinam area, I am studying B.A. English literature in Karpagam University, My father is working as a agricultural labourer. As my father has registered under the farmers protection scheme of the Tamil Nadu government I am getting a Rs.1750 each year. It is very helpful for me to continue my education.”
