RAC seat allocation to increase by January 2017, Indian Railways.

Indian railways have decided to increase the number of seats under Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC). If we have got a ticket under the RAC, it means that we have got a ticket but instead of a berth, we will be allotted seat in which we have to sit for the whole duration of the journey. If anybody who has got a confirmed ticket cancels their ticket, at the last minute a seat will be allocated to the person who has a RAC ticket.

At present 5 seats are allocated under RAC for each compartment. If the RAC seats are increased from 5 to 7, through this 14 people will get their seats confirmed. In the AC compartments if the RAC seats are increased to 3 from the present 2 seats, about 6 people will get a confirmed berth, said a senior officer of railway ministry. This facility is expected to be implemented from January 2017.
