We might have used pencil during our school days to draw pictures and write. There are different types of pencils like B, HB, H among other that are currently available in the market. But when we got information that a pencil will grow, we were surprised and began to wonder about this growing pencil. As we got more curious, we decided to find out more on how a pencil can grow. We learnt that this growing pencil is manufactured in Ponaiyarajapuram, Gandhipark in Coimbatore.

When we heard about this growing pencil many questions sprung in our mind like whether the pencil will grow as we sharpen it and the logic behind this growing pencil? However, once Ranjith Kumar who manufactures these pencils showed us this product, all our doubts were put to rest. The bottom part of the pencil has a capsule, which contains a seed of a plant. When the pencil is used the capsule part of the pencil containing the seed shall be buried in the soil. If we water the pencil it will grow taller and taller into a beautiful plant.
Ranjith Kumar, who is an engineer and his buddy Raja Kamalesh were working together in a software company. Both, quit their jobs and created a pencil company called 'Farmcil'. 'Farmcil' is an unusual combination of two words farmer and pencil', says Ranjith Kumar.

When speaking to SimpliCity about this innovative product Ranjith Kumar said, "I was working in a software company, but I have always wanted to create something new. So, one of my friends and I conceived the idea of Farmcil, the unheard growing pencil. After having a consultation with the Professors, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), we farmed this name. And, began operational this August, 2016.
The company was started to create an interest on agriculture among students. The pencils which are now available in the market are colored. “The paint used in regular pencils, contain many chemicals. A majority of children who use pencils have a tendency to chew them. So we decided to manufacture pencils, sans any harmful chemicals. Thus, we created this pencil under the brand name Farmcil.”
“The bottom portion of the pencil will have a capsule with the seed inside it. Capsules are water soluble in nature. We might have seen medicines in capsule form. The capsule is created from non toxic bio-material. Even if a child keep chews the bottom of the pencil, it will cause no harm anyways. Once, the pencil get wet because of the saliva, it gets sticky. Thus, the child will not want to keep the pencil again in the mouth.”

“The capsule will contain seeds of plants. After the pencil is used the seeds can be planted. In few days, the capsule will dissolve and plants will emerge. There are 10 types of seeds. Each pencil will have a different variety of seed. Lady's fingers, Tomatoes, Beans, Chillies and seeds of flowering plants are placed inside the capsule.” Ranjith says.
The creators of this unique product are confident that students will like Farmcil's eco-friendly and socially responsible product. With sales already begun in all major parts of Tamil Nadu. The inventors have fixed the price tag to Rs.10. The creators of this product share that they have plans to manufacture similar enticing and eco-friendly products for the benefit of children.
