AIYF petitions Collector for restoring Noyyal River.

The All India Youth Federation (AIYF), Coimbatore petitioned the District Collector to protect the water bodies and sources in the district of Coimbatore.

In the petition they have stated that, the Noyyal River which originates in the Velliangiri hills passes through Coimbatore and Tirupur before it joins Cauvery River in Karur. During rains, the Noyyal fills water at all small ponds, lakes through the route.

Noyyal River, the prime water source of Coimbatore, is presently in a pathetic form. Encroachments and continuous release of toxic wastes into the river has completely destructed the river beds.

The Kerala officials have stopped the water which was coming through a canal from Kalkothi hills to Mundanthurai. The Onampuzha canal project which was planned 10 years ago to bring water to Tamilnadu has not been implemented so far. It is dis-heartening that no efforts have been be initiated to revamp the project.

An inclusive plan to remove all encroachments and deposition of wastes ands toxic substances into the river beds should be planned by the officials. Planting of eco-friendly trees that protects the river beds and environment should be planted along with removal of Prosopsis Juliflora (Semai Karuvela maram) that sucks the ground water and hinders the growth of other species of trees.

Removal of weeds and de-silting should be initiated and monitored at regular intervals in all water bodies.

AIYF, President, Kalyanasundaram, AIYF, Secretary Vasanthakumar among other office-bearer of AIYF Coimbatore were present when this petition was presented.
