CBM college students protest for basic amenities, teachers

After the talks with the college management, revenue department officials, police officers and student representatives failed, the students of the CBM college of arts and science conducted a sit in protest inside the college on Monday night. Nearly 30 students said, they would sit through the night and would stop the protest only after the management agreed to their demands.

The students have been protesting for nearly a year now seeking basic facilities, teaching staff and some infrastructure. "The talks were held but when we asked the secretary of the college to appoint additional staff as there were just 24 teachers right now, they said they would not appoint any new teachers. They asked us to take the transfer certificate and leave the college," said a student.

The Tahsildhar, M Subramanian said that the college principal, secretary, students representatives, police officials and the joint-director of collegiate education took part in the talks. "The management said that they would set up better infrastructure and provide the basic amenities to the students. But when the students demanded that additional staff be appointed immediately, the management did not agree to this. So the talks have again hit a road block," he said adding that they would soon hold talks again, this week.

The secretary of the college, C M Ramaraj said that they will hold talks in a couple of days and ensure that the issue is solved soon. "We will sort this issue soon. We will meet again soon and discuss the demands," he said.
