Yi to mark 25th January as 'No honking day'!

Young Indians (Yi) is an integral part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). With close to 40 chapters across the country, the 'Horn Not Ok Please' (HNOP) is one of the key projects of Yi that was implemented in Coimbatore, last year.

Under this project, motorists were educated on the alarming increase in noise pollution caused by honking unnecessarily on our roads. This project also aims at proposing ways to minimize noise pollution at our roads and use horns, only under necessary circumstances.

Yesterday, the HNOP project was initiated by Yi in Pollachi. As a part of the launch, an awareness session to educate vehicle drivers on the ill-effects of honking unnecessarily was dealt during the session. Bus drivers from TNSTC took part in this campaign. The participants held stickers denoting HNOP and assured their support to refrain from honking pointlessly.

The TNSTC drivers also interacted with the team from Yi and raised their concern on honking. They suggested that awareness should be created amongst the pedestrians as they tend to cross the roads all of a sudden and panic the drivers. During such unanticipated circumstances, the drivers are forced to honk hardly to warn them off the roads. Hence, a joint effort from the public and the motorists could help eliminate noise pollution through honking, the drivers suggested. All TNSTC buses are provided with horns that are well within the proposed decibel levels, they said.

Pradeep and Vikranth from Yi interacted with the participants and revealed that their team would continue to host awareness campaigns on noise pollution. Yi would join hands with the city traffic police to spread the word of HNOP to the public and educational institutions. And, one such campaign would be hosted during the Coimbatore Vizha from 27th January to 5th February, Pradeep said.

The students of PSG College of Arts and Science enacted a drama conveying the message of HNOP and the effects of noise pollution on the environment. A team of students from this college, lead by student coordinator Mythili along with the members of Yi were present during the awareness session in Pollachi.
