Members of city-based NGO stage protest seeking permission to allow jallikattu during pongal

This morning a few members of city-based NGO, Youngest Generation staged a protest at the VOC Park Grounds seeking permission to allow jallikattu during the Pongal festival. It has been reported that about 10 members of this NGO gathered at the venue and held flex banners with messages seeking permission to host the jallikattu which is the traditional sport of Tamil Nadu. Several members of the public voluntarily joined in this protest, thus taking the number of protestors to over a hundred.

Speaking to SimpliCity, Gokul, one of the members of this NGO said, “Jallikattu is the traditional sport of Tamil Nadu. The Supreme Court has banned the jallikattu. However, in a bid to keep the tradition of our region alive, we the people of this region must unite and host the jallikattu during pongal.”

A rally was also hosted on Avinashi Road as part of the protest. Police dispersed the crowd as permission to host this protest was not obtained.
