Members of the Indian Students Federation submitted a petition to the Coimbatore district collector in which they have requested that basic amenities are provided at the government hostel and the girl students who are staying at this hostel should be treated with respect.
The petitioners stated that the hostel currently lacked basic facilities like toilets, drinking water, fan and lights. They also stated that the buildings are in a dilapidated condition. In some hostels, many students are made to stay in a small room. The food that is provided at this hostel is of poor quality alleged the petitioners.
“The money that has been allocated for providing meat to the students is not utilised by the hostel warden. The wardens and the cooks are ill treating the school children. They abuse the children using foul language. The sanitary napkins originally meant for the girl inmates of this hostel are being sold in the market.” said one of the petitioners.
One of the inmates of this hostel stated that the hostel buildings are in poor state of sanitation due to which the students are in danger of being effected by various diseases. The wardens are not providing the allowance of Rs. 110 that has been allocated for the Adi Dravidar and Tribal students for buying soap, oil, having a haircut, buying a pillow and bed sheet. Another source shared that hostels are run without a warden during the night. This has made the hostels an insecure place.
Through their petition the students have requested the district collector to take necessary action.
