It is been alleged that Kerala Government is planning to construct check dams across the Bhavani river near Attappadi at two junctures. Thekuvattai and Manjakandi are the two places ear-marked by the government for construction, say sources.

The 217 km long Bhavani river originates from the hills of Nilgiri mountains and enters Kerala at the Silent Valley National Park, Attappadi, then en routing back into Tamil Nadu. The river is deemed to be the perennial source for agriculture in the districts of Coimbatore and Erode.
It is speculated that the Kerala government has already kick-started the preliminary construction work at the ear-marked sites. Loads of gravels, giant rods, JCB's and other construction material are spotted across the place. Construction of check dams at these spots would hinder the inflow of water into Tamil Nadu., especially the districts of Coimbatore and Erode.
Condemning this act and to thwart the construction, the Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam (TPDK) and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) have called in for protests in Coimbatore, today.
The protesting parties have alleged that the check dam construction attempt by Kerala government across Siruvani river at Agali, Kerala was terminated after the central government passed orders. And, now this act of Kerala government of building check dams across Bhavani at Attappadi will adversely affect the inflow of water to Coimbatore and Erode districts, thereby affecting agriculture and farmers'.
