This morning, here in the city, several cadres of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) party were arrested for protesting against the Kerala government for construction of check dams across the river Bhavani at Attappady, Kerala.
The preliminary works have begun at Thekottai, a place 30 kms away from Anaikatti. The 12 foot check dam if constructed will affect the water inflow to the three districts, Coimbatore, Erode and Tiruppur. They also alleged the Kerala Government for persistently indulging in such activities affecting the livelihood of the Tamil Nadu farmers.
'Initially, it was the Mullai Periyar dam issue, later the Siruvani water sharing issue and now it's Bhavani river issue' they said.
As a part of the protest, the MDMK members stopped a Kerala bus at K.G. Chavadi and demonstrated a sit-in-protest on the roads. The party cadres also shouted slogans against the Kerala government for construction of the check dams across the Bhavani river.
The police arrested the protestors for blocking the roads and causing public inconvenience.
