Chief Minister O. Paneer Selvam's announcement in Jallikattu issue

Jallikattu, the bull-taming sport, which reflects the culture and tradition of Tamil Nadu should be conducted without any interference' has been the plea of the millions of people in the state of Tamil Nadu, who are on the streets protesting for their cultural rights.

The Supreme Court has repeatedly banned the conduct of Jallikattu and also quashed the petition filed by the Tamil Nadu government on this issue. The Environment Ministry of the Central Government made an announcement on 07.01.2016. This announcement was challenged by various organisations in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ordered an interim ban and the case was adjourned without passing a judgment.

Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, O. Panneerselvam, this morning has briefed the people of this state on the process that the government intends to carry on with immediate effect. He said, “I have requested the Prime minister and the Central Government to pass an interim law for conduct of Jallikattu this year. I met honorable Prime Minister yesterday at his residence and requested the government to pass an ordinance to conduct Jallikattu. The Prime Minister told that he will respect the feelings of the people of Tamil Nadu.”

“The Prime Minister assured that the Central Government will support the State Government in its efforts. I stayed back in Delhi and discussed with the senior lawyers about the changes that have to be made at the state level for conduct of Jallikattu. It has been planned to pass an ordinance at the state to conduct Jallikattu. The draft of the law will be sent to the Internal Affairs Ministry of the Central Government, which will be forwarded to the President with recommendations from the Prime Minister. On orders of the President, the Governor can pass a law to conduct Jallikattu” CM said.

He also affirmed that, 'The law will be passed within one or two days after getting the required approvals from the President and the Governor. Hence, I request the students and member of various organisations to withdraw their protests.”
