Christian communities begin 40 days of Lent on Ash Wednesday following mass at St. Michael's Cathedral in the city

A large number of Christian communities participated in the mass held at St. Michael's Cathedral in Coimbatore on the occasion of Ash Wednesday and began Lent.


Coimbatore: Christians around the world observe a 40-day period of fasting which is called Lent to replicate the incidents in the life of Jesus Christ and help the needy.



They observe these days every year as a period of penance and the days of abstinence period begins on the day of Ash Wednesday.



During this special mass, the foreheads of Christians are smeared with ashes. It is said that, this ash is smeared to signify the impermanence of life.



On this occasion, mass was performed at St. Michael's Cathedral, Periya Bazaar Street, in the city and ashes were applied on everyone's foreheads.

The Lent, which began today, will be observed until the Saturday following Good Friday when Jesus Christ was crucified.

It is to be noted that Easter will be celebrated on Sunday after Good Friday.
