The Chithirai festival at Thandu Mariamman Temple on Avinashi Road, Coimbatore started with a flag hoisting on April 16. Devotees partake in daily processions, culminating in a major event on April 24 with fire pot and milk pot rituals.

Coimbatore: The revered Thandu Mariamman Temple located on Avinashi Road, Uppilipalayam, is currently bustling with the annual Chithirai Festival, which began with a sacred flag hoisting on April 16. Occupying a significant place in the hearts of local devotees, this festival features a grand procession of the deity through various traditional rituals, drawing hundreds to the temple grounds each day.

As part of the festivities, the deity was taken on daily street parades atop different vehicles, showcasing the communal spirit and religious fervor of the region. A special feature was the 'Thirukkalyanam' or celestial wedding, which saw the deity adorned in magnificent garb. This was followed by the procession where devotees carried various sacred offerings and ritual objects through the streets in a splendid display.

The climax of the festival occurred on April 24 when hundreds of devotees participated in a ritual offering known as 'Nerthikadan'. Carrying fire pots and bearing milk pots (paalkudam), devotees marched through the main roads of the town from Koni Amman Temple, passing significant local streets such as Town Hall Road, Oppanaikar Street, Lingappachetti Street, across the Brook Bond Road, and Nanjappa Road, ultimately converging at the Thandu Mariamman Temple. This profound expression of faith was accompanied by traditional music and fervent prayers, enveloping the area in a spiritual ambiance.

Ensuring the safety of the participants and spectators, over 200 police officers were deployed along the routes taken by the procession to manage the crowd and maintain order. The presence of such a large crowd illustrated the deep cultural and religious significance of this event for the people of Coimbatore.

The festival not only stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region but also fosters a sense of community among its participants. The Thandu Mariamman Temple's Chithirai Festival continues to be a beacon of tradition and spirituality, drawing larger crowds each year and leaving lasting memories in the hearts of devotees.
