Two Female Wild Elephants Electrocuted Near Pollachi, Forest Department Investigates

Two female wild elephants were found dead in a private agricultural land near Paruthiyur, Pollachi. The incident occurred when the elephants came into contact with electric wires while crossing from forest area to farmland.


Coimbatore: In a tragic incident near Pollachi, two female wild elephants were found dead due to electrocution in a private agricultural land near Paruthiyur. The Forest Department has launched an investigation into the matter.

Field staff from the Anamalai Tiger Reserve's Pollachi Forest Range were conducting their daily patrol in the Kottur division, Paruthiyur Umandi Hill area. During their rounds, they discovered the carcasses of two female wild elephants approximately 1 kilometer away from the protected forest area, in a hilly region of privately owned agricultural land.



The elephants were found to have died after coming into contact with electric wires while crossing from a higher elevation to a lower ground area. Upon discovery, the Range Forest Officer was immediately informed of the situation.



Following the report, Anamalai Tiger Reserve Field Director Bhargava Teja and Pollachi Range Forest Officer Gnanapalamurugan rushed to the scene to conduct a preliminary investigation. Although a team of veterinarians led by Dr. Vijayaraghavan was ready to perform post-mortem examinations, officials stated that due to nightfall, the procedure would be conducted the following morning.



The incident of two female elephants dying from electrocution has caused a stir in the region, raising concerns about the safety of wildlife and the need for better protective measures in areas where forest lands border human settlements.

Forest Department officials are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances that led to this unfortunate event and to implement measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
