Lawyers approach CJ, seek Coimbatore bench of high court

Office bearers of the Coimbatore Bar Association (CBA) met with Madras high court chief justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul a few days ago and requested him to take steps to set up the Coimbatore bench of the Madras high court.

They said that the chief justice told them he would take steps to set up a Madras high court circuit bench in Coimbatore. They also added that if the circuit bench was established in Coimbatore, then the lawyers and people from the western region of Tamil Nadu would not need to go to Madras high court.

Chief Justice of India TS Thakur, Madras high court chief justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and many judges from the apex court and various high courts of the country visited Coimbatore last week to attend the inauguration of the regional centre of the Tamil Nadu state judicial academy.

CBA president K M Dhandapani, secretary M Loganathan and a few office bearers met the Madras high court chief justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and discussed with him the possibilities of setting up a Coimbatore bench of the Madras High court.

"Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul told us that he would take steps to set up the circuit bench of Madras High court at Coimbatore. Our bar association will send a detailed note to Kaul soon. The note would have the details of the districts in western Tamil Nadu and if the circuit bench is established in Coimbatore it would help those travelling regularly to Chennai for cases," said Dhandapani.

CBA secretary Loganathan said those who wanted anticipatory bails in connection with criminal cases have to approach the Madras high court. They have to travel more than 400 km to get the anticipatory bail or to appear before the high court in person in connection with the cases. If the circuit bench is established in Coimbatore, people won't go to Chennai as the bench will be functioning 10 days a month in Coimbatore. So, most of the cases will be dealt with here itself, they said.
