Two Coimbatore junctions to be redesigned at Rs 6.5 crore

The national highways wing of the Tamil Nadu state highways department will redesign two major junctions in Coimbatore to ease traffic flow and to reduce congestion.

If all goes as planned, not only will the Sungam Junction where nearly five roads meet and the Lanka corner junction, that is always congested, will be redesigned but they will also become ideal junctions free from congestion.

The estimated project cost is Rs 6.5 crore for both junctions. Besides traffic islands, the department also plans to set up medians as per the national highways standards, build drains, foot paths and remove the traffic signals at these junctions.

"This project has been sanctioned and tenders have been floated. We will begin the work in ten days," said a senior national highways official.

The officials said the medians in various stretches are not as per the Indian Road Congress Standards (IRC). At Lanka corner, the highways department plans to construct drains that will 90m in length and 1.2m in depth so that water clogging is avoided.

Footpaths will also be set up and the entire stretch will be redesigned. Keeping the traffic and population of 2036 in mind, the project is being implemented.

"The existing free left from Big Bazaar Street to Good shed road will be widened. A traffic island will be created such that the signal will not be required at all," said an official.

"We have studied the Egmore junction near the police commissioner's office in Chennai and will replicate it here," he added.

At Sungam junction, the road from Ukkadam, Singanallur, Puliyakulam, Nirmala college road and CMCH meet. "We will create a rotary island there and remove the signals. Various encroachments near the Puliyakulam road will be removed and a free left will be created there," said a highways official.

Another official added that the open drain near Valakulam tank at the junction would be closed using a slab and a free left would be created there.

"Traffic regulation will take place periodically and we would implement the project side by side without causing any hindrance," said an official.
