Implement RTE applications in CBSE schools - NGO Ilaiyathalaimurai petitions state government

Ilayathalaimurai made an urgent plea to the government's principal secretary for school education on Monday, highlighting the need to immediately implement RTE applications in CBSE schools.

Coimbatore: A Chennai-based NGO named Ilayathalaimurai made an urgent plea to the government's principal secretary for school education on Monday, highlighting the need to immediately implement RTE applications in CBSE schools. Additionally, it pushed the government to allow a price fixation committee for CBSE schools and other private educational institutions.

According to the petition that was filed, the Tamil Nadu government is authorised to set tuition rates for all private schools operating within the state of Tamil Nadu under TN Act No. 22 of 2009. Following this, some private schools contacted the supreme court in 2016 in order to obtain an interim order saying that the committee would not have the authority to set the tuition for CBSE and ICSE schools.

In contrast, the Central Board states that all state governments, with the exception of those responsible for administering exams and granting school affiliation, are authorised to control fees and RTE-related provisions. In this respect, the NGO urged the state government to revoke the temporary order and get involved in putting the RTE into effect in CBSE schools for the benefit of the students.

The majority of CBSE schools in the state require more than the minimal tuition fees, according to J. Sankar, Coordinator, Ilayathalaimurai.

The fee fixation becomes a barrier to their ability to make money because the bulk of them are run by political figures. With respect to the implementation of RTE and the price fixation in CBSE schools, we had previously appealed to the then state education minister Sengottaiyan and the current minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, but in vain.

Through our NGO, more than 1500 student applications are handled annually. We sincerely ask that the state government make the necessary endeavours for the student fraternity's welfare.
