14-kg tomato box sold for ₹ 800 in Kinathukadavu market as prices slump

The cost of country tomatoes slumped. A 14-kg box was sold for ₹ 800 at the Kinathukadavu vegetable market.

Coimbatore: The 14-kg box of country tomato was auctioned for ₹ 800 today at the Kinathukadavu vegetable market.

The tomato yield was affected due to rains in Kinathukadavu subsequently reducing the inflow of country tomatoes in to the Kinathukadavu vegetable market. As on Sunday, traders had bid up to ₹ 500 per box of country tomatoes weighing 14-kg.

This resulted in the sale of country tomatoes for more than ₹ 120 per kg in the shops, affecting the public. Lack of rain in the last three days and slowing tomato business in shops, has contributed to the slump in the price of tomatoes during the auction at Kinathukadavu vegetable market on Thursday.

A box of 14-kg country tomatoes was auctioned for ₹ 800 and it is expected tomatoes will be sold at a lower price in stores in a few days.
