TNAU forecasts market price for Maize; calls out to farmers to decide accordingly

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University's price forecast committee stating that the maize price will cheer the farmers, has predicted the prices for maize for the year 2022-23, keeping in mind several factors and has advised farmers to decide accordingly.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University's Price Forecast committee has predicted the prices for maize for the year 2022-23, keeping in mind the prices in the past 27 years and also the Ukraine-Russia War that is underway and has thus stated that farmers decide marketing accordingly.

The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore has developed market advisory for maize.

According to the Second Advance Estimates of Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (2021-22), India has nearly 9.5 million hectares of maize with a production of 32.4 million tonnes. The crop is majorly produced in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and is exported to neighbouring countries like Myanmar, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan.

Due to the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war crises, there is an increase in export demand for Indian maize especially from Vietnam and Malaysia. Besides, high fuel cost also increases the cost of transportation of maize from other states.

In Tamil Nadu, maize is cultivated in an area of 0.34 million hectare with 2.47 million tonnes of production during 2019-20. Major maize growing districts of Tamil Nadu are Perambalur, Ariyalur, Salem, Dindigul, Namakkal, Pudukottai, Tirupur and Viluppuram. Maize already started arriving from Tamil Nadu maize clusters. The delayed North East monsoon in the Karnataka however, mainly in Chitradurga and Davangere has significantly affected maize, triggering price rise due to the reduction in market arrivals in current season.

The Price Forecasting Scheme has analyzed the past 27 years prices that prevailed in Udumalpet Regulated Market for maize. As per the analysis and market survey, the farm gate price of good quality maize during March-May 2022, will be Rs.2300-2400 per quintal. Hence, farmers are advised to take up appropriate marketing decision.
