Two-wheelers with high-decibel exhausts will be fined Rs.10,000 - RTO officials

Installing silencers (exhausts) to make a high decibel is a traffic violation. During the vehicle audit, if such violations are found, the vehicles will be impounded and a fine of up to Rs 10,000 will be imposed – RTO officials warned.

Coimbatore: Recently, the number of young people in Coimbatore city and suburbs have been found riding two-wheelers at high speed, while also installing high-decibel exhausts (silencers) on those two-wheelers instead of the original silencers. This has caused the public to protest against such violations stating that apart from noise pollution, fellow motorists and pedestrians on the road are panicking at the noise. Women, children and the elderly walking on the roads seem to fear these noisy bikes the most.

Bullet, Yamaha and Sports bike models with high cc capacity seem to be the ones that are being fitted with high-noise silencers. Youth who fit these on their bikes for "thrill and style" seem to be performing dangerous stunts on the roads with no thought to consequences. On Coimbatore's Siruvani Road, Race Course Road, Thadagam Road, Avinashi Road and flyovers, it is common to see these bikes with high-noise silencers speeding past. In order to avoid the traffic police, these daredevil riders are seen taking alternate roads, causing accidents as well as disturbing residents. The public fear that if such violations are not curbed, the menace will increase in the city.

RTO officials warned saying, "In every vehicle, silencers are manufactured in accordance with the provisions of the law applying to those vehicles. It is a traffic violation to replace them and install silencers so that they can make more noise. During the vehicle audit conducted by officials, if such violations are found, the vehicles will be impounded and a fine of up to Rs. 10,000 will be imposed."

Afew days ago, the Hyderabad Police seized 1,000 high-noise silencers in a single day in a crackdown by the Hyderabad Police to track down people who had installed high-volume silencers on two-wheelers. Locals in the city lament that with Coimbatore already known for a high number of accidents, such high-noise speeding violations by daredevil two-wheelers may lead to a further increase in the number of accidents in the city.
