First tribal student from Coimbatore District passes law degree; aims to become a judge

Kaliyammal, who graduated as the first tribal law graduate in Coimbatore district, said her aim was to get selected as a judge and do whatever she could to help the tribal people.

Coimbatore: Kaliyammal, the first law student who has graduated from the tribal community in Coimbatore district, has said that her aim is to help the tribal people in whatever way she can by getting elected as a judge.

Koppanari village in Tholampalayam panchayat next to Karamadai in Coimbatore district is inhabited by a large number of tribal people. Kaliyammal (30) is the daughter of Maruthan and Andichi couple from this village. He holds the first degree of advocate in the tribal community in Coimbatore district.

Speaking to reporters, advocate Kaliyammal said, “There are more than 100 houses in koppanari tribal village. The children here go to a primary school few kilometres away. They have to go to Anaikatti or Tholampalayam to pursue higher studies. Due to the lack of adequate bus facilities in the area, parents do not send their children to high school and higher secondary schools.

I studied in Koppanari Government Primary School from 1st to 5th standard and Anaikatti Government School from 6th to 10th standard. When I was in the eighth standard, I saw a lawyer who came to our village and became interested in studying as a lawyer. I did my B.A. in Economics from the Government Arts College, Coimbatore. Then I applied to study LLB.

For the first two years, I studied at Madurai law college. As my father's health deteriorated and he was hospitalised, my studies were hampered. With the help of many, I completed my third year from the Government Law College, Coimbatore and got an LLB degree on August 30, 2022.

During the school and college holidays, I used to graze goats, work as an agricultural labourer and study with the income I earn. In the evening, I would teach the children of our village a lesson.

I am planning to write the exams for judges. My aim is to be elected as a judge and do my best to help the tribal people.
